These charms are based off the coinage of the Hongwu emperor (also known by his temple name, Taizu) who was the founder of the Ming dynasty (1368–1644AD) and reigned from 1368-1398AD. A well remembered emperor, many charms were cast based off the coinage of the Hongwu emperor.The Ox (or water buffalo) featured on the reverse could be symbolizing how Zhu Yuanzhang (Hongwu) came from a poor family of farming peasants, or perhaps just a zodiac reference.
