Token for the Café of Pierre Thielen and his son (Jean-)Pierre Thielen, 79 op der Strooss, Heffingen. The Café Thielen token is also available with a "1945" countermark (MH 019) or a "45" countermark (MH 020) on the reverse glass.
Pierre Thielen comes from Hersberg. In early 1938, Pierre Thielen and his sisters left their native village for economic reasons. Settling in Heffingen, Pierre Thielen opened a café at 79, op der Strooss. On September 2, 1938, he registered as a cafe owner, bowling alley operator and grocer.
On November 22 of the same year, Pierre Thielen deliberately set fire to his parents' home in Hersberg. Pierre Thielen confessed to the crime, citing financial difficulties and the prospect of an insurance refund. In April 1939, he was sentenced to 7 years' imprisonment.
Pierre Thielen, the son, took over the café at the end of 1938, running it alone or with his sisters until 1952, when he married Anne Ludwig. Pierre Thielen died on February 25, 1974, and the business remained in the family until 1978, when it was last run by Pierre Thielen, the grandson.
