Comment
Platt Evens had his business at 149 Main St. from about 1829 TO 1840. HT-375 does not have “BALE, NY.” on the obverse as does HT-376. It also has a more circular rosette on the reverse compared to HT-376. HT-375 (R-6, 13-30 known) is German silver and HT-375A (R-7, 4-12 known) is brass.A draper was a merchant who sold cloth which was draped over objects so it could be easily seen and felt. In addition to his primary business of selling cloth and making garments, he stocked a wide variety of items. They included church bells, India rubber air beds, porcelain teeth, seeds, glass lamps, percussion lock pistols, powder flasks, barber razors, and buttons. In 1837 he bragged in an advertisement of having sent an order for merchandise to New York and receiving it back via Philadelphia and Pittsburgh in only 16 days.
