This is the only Hard Times token of the temperance movement, which was very active in those years. Albany is the capital of the state of New York. Many people involved in the government were from other parts of the state and needed to stay in hotels. There, they ate meals and drank, as well as slept. Temperance Houses, of which there were many in the United States at the time, did not serve alcohol. As noted on the reverse, the hotel also had a grocery store.
