Comment

This is one of a set of anti President Van Buren ship tokens. (HT-18-23) It is the only one with Liberty on the obverse, and with leaves on each side of WEBSTER on the reverse. It was minted anticipating the election of 1840 when it was presumed that he would be opposed by Daniel Webster. It turned out that Webster was not the candidate and Van Buren lost to William Henry Harrison who took office in 1841. This was likely minted in 1837 or 1838.
