Doremus, Suydam & Nixon was a dry goods wholesaler and retailer which issued a number of Hard Times (HT-252 to HT-259) and merchant tokens. By their addresses, we can tell when they were issued. They were at 209 Pearl Street from July 13, 1831 to July 8, 1834 when in the early morning “an extensive conflagration” burned and collapsed their five story brick storehouse.Four Hard Times tokens have this design. HT-253 is copper and R-6 (13-30 known). HT-254 brass is R-6, HT-254A silvered brass is R-6, and HT-254B gilt brass is R-8 (2-3 known). HT-254B is shown in the photo. They were struck by Wright & Bale.
