Comment
The tokens were used to pay the Mexican peasants working in Haciendas. They could exchange the tokens at the Hacienda's store for food, liquor, clothing, or firewood. The Hacienda owners we are also proprietors of the stores, known as "Tienda de Raya". It was a way to assure that the peasants were in constant debt with their masters. Debts were passed on generation to generation. They were abolished in 1915.A firewood "Tarea" is the equivalent to 4 m3 of wood.
