A nationwide art competition with a total of $500,000 in prize money was held to select the obverse designs of the fifty medal. There were more than 13,000 nation-wide entries in the contest. The reverse design of each medal was selected by The Bicentennial Commission of that state.
NOTE: Individual state medals were minted in various metals, sizes and finishes. Some states have ordered additional medals. The complete set of fifty medals was issued over the period 1972–1976.
