Comment
A nationwide art competition with a total of $500,000 in prize money was held to select the obverse designs of the fifty medal. There were more than 13,000 nation-wide entries in the contest. The reverse design of each medal was selected by The Bicentennial Commission of that state.NOTE: Individual state medals were minted in various metals, sizes and finishes. Some states have ordered additional medals. The complete set of fifty medals was issued over the period 1972–1976.
The example shown here is a replacement, non-proof but rather, one of less numerous "prooflike", individual issues.
A large binder was also sold.
