A nationwide art competition with a total of $500,000 in prize money was held to select the obverse designs of the fifty medals, the first prize winner from each state. A separate panel of judges composed of distinguished citizens of each state was appointed in each state to choose the winning designs. There were more than 13,000 nation-wide entries in the contest. Each medal is a prize winning work of art, and the complete collection reflects the special character of each of the United States. The reverse design of each medal was selected by The Bicentennial Commission of that state. NOTE: Individual state medals were minted in various metals, sizes and finishes. Some states have ordered additional medals. The complete set of fifty medals was issued over the period 1972–1976.A large binder was also sold.
