As early as 1926, the Belgian tax authorities issued national dog tax tokens.
Only round tokens were minted by the Royal Belgian Mint in 1926, 1941, 1948 and 1949. Other tokens of different shapes were struck by private mints.
From 1941, a number had to be affixed to the reverse.
Blind and invalid dogs were exempt from this tax!
The national dog tax was abolished on December 24, 1949, but some provinces and communes continued to levy it.
A ring passed through the hole in the token enabled it to be attached to the dog's collar.
