The Berlin Wall (German: Berliner Mauer), known as the "Wall of Shame" to West Germans and officially called the "Antifascist Protection Wall" by the East German government (German: Antifachistischer Schutzwall), was erected in the middle of Berlin by the German Democratic Republic (GDR): Antifachistischer Schutzwall), was erected in the middle of Berlin on the night of August 12/13, 1961 by the German Democratic Republic (GDR), in an attempt to halt the growing exodus of its inhabitants to the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG).
