Comment
John Hancock (1737-1793) was a symbol of open resistance to British rule even before the Boston Massacre of 1770. He became president of the Continental Congress in 1775 and released the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776. His bold signature almost appeared to be the only one on the document. The first elected governor of Massachusetts, Hancock was instrumental in getting his state to ratify the new U.S. Constitution in 1788.Price
