The Duchy of Nevers has existed since the 9th century. It passed between various houses, including that of Flanders, and was brought by marriage to Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy. By marriage again, it passed to the Dukes of Cleves and became a duchy-peerage in 1538. It then passed to the Gonzagues in 1565 and was purchased by Mazarin in 1659. It remained in the Mazarin family until the French Revolution. (CGB)
