The Salins Group, whose main component is Compagnie des Salins du Midi et des Salines de l'Est, is one of Europe's leading salt producers. It is dedicated exclusively to the production and marketing of salt.

The group is also the only European player to master and implement all three salt production techniques - solar, thermal and mining. It can supply salt in all its forms, raw or processed, and for all applications: human food, agriculture, chemicals, snow removal, water treatment and other industrial activities.

The group was founded in 1856 in Aigues-Mortes by a group of salt-mill owners, which became the Renouard et Cie company (Alfred Renouard) before becoming, in 1868, a joint-stock company, the Compagnie des Salins du Midi. The head office was in Montpellier. Adolphe d'Eichthal became Chairman. In 1890, salt production exceeded 80,000 tons.
