Medal with ribbon:
Under the law of November 9, 1911, the Commemorative Medal for the 1870-1871 war was created, to be awarded with a diploma bearing the name of the 242,500 surviving veterans. The medal project, initiated by Senator Maurice Berteaux of Henry, had been ratified by a vote in the Chamber of Deputies on July 3 and in the Senate on July 12.
Mounted on a ribbon striped in black (the color of mourning) and green (the color of hope for the lost Alsace).
