The cooperative society 'Les Coopérateurs d'Escaut et Sambre', retail trade and agricultural production, was created in 1919 in Cambrai by merging several cooperative societies. In 1930, it became the Union of Cooperators of Escaut and Sambre. It had 6,000 members in 1920, 45,000 in 1939, and 65,000 in 1970. Between 1920 and 1976, it absorbed about forty different cooperatives.
