Jean Joly, maître des comptes, was elected mayor for three periods: 1667 - 1670, 1681 - 1684 and 1687 - 1690.At his request, letters patent were published in December 1668, deciding :
1/ the reduction of Dijon's magistracy to septemvirs, i.e. the mayor, known as the vicomte-maieur, and the six échevins: the procureur syndic, the secrétaire, the receveur, the contrôleur and two prud'hommes;
2/ that no one may be reappointed to the échevinage until four years after leaving it;
3/ that the mayor will be elected every two years, starting in 1670.
It is in reference to the first of these three measures taken by Jean Joly that the reverse of this token alludes to the "seven columns" that designate the mayor and six aldermen.
