The crescent moon alludes to an old story: one night, a watchman standing on the tower sounded the fire alarm, and everyone ran out of their homes, but no fire was found. In fact, it turned out that the watchman had seen reflections of the moon and had made a mistake. This earned the inhabitants of Mechelen the nickname De maanblazers, the moon extinguishers/.
