Comment

In order to encourage the improvement of horse breeding, King Oscar II issued a decree on the first of November 1872, stating that a special reward medal should be awarded by Stuteri överstyrelsen (stud farm executive board) at annual meetings, to owners of proven young horses, who were considered worthy of being awarded a prize

When the mint in Stockholm minted these medals (1875-1939), the silver medals were awarded in a simple colored square box with a sliding lid, and sometimes with the name of the horse, and the year the medal was awarded written on.

Meanwhile, the bronze medals were sometimes awarded in a similar box, and sometimes in a simple envelope with “Kungl. Stuteriöverstyrelsen” stamped around the Lesser coat of arms of Sweden.

There are three variants of this medal.

Type 1:

Obverse signature as “LEA AHLBORN FEC.” and no signature on reverse

Type 2:

Obverse signature as “LEA AHLBORN.” and no signature on reverse

Type 3:

Obverse signature as “LEA AHLBORN.” and with signature on reverse
