Comment
In order to encourage the improvement of horse breeding, King Oscar II issued a decree on the first of November 1872, stating that a special reward medal should be awarded by Stuteri överstyrelsen (stud farm executive board) at annual meetings, to owners of proven young horses, who were considered worthy of being awarded a prize
When the mint in Stockholm minted these medals (1875-1939), the silver medals were awarded in a simple colored square box with a sliding lid, and sometimes with the name of the horse, and the year the medal was awarded written on.
Meanwhile, the bronze medals were sometimes awarded in a similar box, and sometimes in a simple envelope with “Kungl. Stuteriöverstyrelsen” stamped around the Lesser coat of arms of Sweden.
When Sporrong & Co took over production in 1940, their round boxes started to be used instead.
Weight typically varies between 33 to 34 g.
There are three versions of this medal. Type one and two were minted by the mint in Stockholm, and type three by Sporrong. The year is found on the edge
