CHARLES-EMMANUEL-JOSEPH, PRINCE DE GAVRE (1739-1769)
Charles-Emmanuel-Joseph de Gavre was born in 1694. He descended from the ancient and illustrious family of the Sires de Gavre, who took their name from the seigneury of Gavre, on the Scheldt between Ghent and Oudenaarde. Marquis d'Ayseau, Count of Beaurieu, Frésin and St-Empire, he was created Prince of Gavre on June 13, 1736, by Emperor Charles VI. At the beginning of 1717, he was given a company in the Westerloo regiment, and fought in the Belgrade campaign the same year, as adjutant to the Prince of Savoy. In 1728, he was promoted to lieutenant-colonel. Charles de Gavre was appointed Governor of Namur by letters patent dated September 7, 1739. He received a glowing reception in Namur, where he was sworn in on November 9. On October 24, 1739, a contract was signed between the States and Philippe Roettiers for the manufacture of silver and copper tokens to commemorate the Prince de Gavre's accession to the government of Namur.
page 75-76 :
The tokens were delivered in the following quantities: 1,554 in silver and 2,328 in copper. Distribution followed the usual protocol. However, we read in a magistrate's request to Maria Theresa, dated May 21, 1770, that a certain number of tokens from Charles de Gavre's inauguration were distributed to officers of the bourgeois companies.
