Comment

Counterstamped swastika over a standard issue 1 Groschen of 1927 (KM# 2836). See Gregory Brunk's book on counterstamps. See also "Medallic Portraits of Adolf Hitler" by Colbert and Hyder for more information on German Nazi propaganda efforts in Austria. These rare counterstamps and Donation tokens were generally issued after 1933 or 1934 when the President of Austria, Dollfuss banned Nazi propaganda in Austria, before the Anschluss of 1938, when Austria came under NSDAP rule. These counterstamped pieces were made and issued following the leader (Dollfuss) of Austria's ban (1932 - 1933) on Nazi insignia, uniforms and propaganda as a way of keeping the thought of Nazi unification in peoples' minds.
