It was on Arromanches beach that, during the Battle of Normandy, immediately after D-Day on June 6, 1944, the Allies established the Mulberry B port, a temporary artificial harbor to enable the landing of heavy equipment, without waiting for the conquest of deep-water ports such as Le Havre or Cherbourg (Cherbourg-en-Cotentin since 2016). Although located in the center of the Gold Beach landing zone, Arromanches was spared the brunt of the fighting on D-Day. To enable a port to be set up and run smoothly as quickly as possible, the beach had to be left undamaged and the surrounding communications routes preserved. https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arromanches-les-Bains
