Comment
Alcatraz Island was first explored in 1775 and named Isla de los Alcatraces (“Isle of the Pelicans”). The United States government purchased it in 1849 and erected the first lighthouse on the coast of California in 1854. Prison buildings were built and the island became a United States military prison in 1907. In 1934 it was converted to a federal prison until 1963 when it was abandoned.
