A schoolteacher by training, Ernest Bastin (1870-1926) developed a passion for sculpture. After training at the Schaerbeek and Brussels Academies, where he was a pupil of Léon Mignon, he devoted himself fully to his art, creating busts, bulls and plough horses in the image of his teacher from Liège. In addition to commissions for outdoor monuments such as the Gembloux bronze, he also created small models in terracotta or bronze representing animals or people associated with industrial or agricultural activities, as well as sporting events.
