Comment

Emin Pasha was born as Eduard Schnitzler in 1840 in Opole. The doctor and traveler to Africa had been in Egyptian service since 1871, became government doctor in Sudan in 1876 as Emin Effendi and in 1878 governor of the Equatorial Province as Emin Bei. As a result of the Mahdi uprising, he turned to German East Africa, entered German service in 1890 and undertook an expedition to Lake Victoria, on which he, exceeding his assignment, hoisted the German flag over Tabora on August 4, 1890. In 1892 he was assassinated in Kinema on an expedition by order of the Sultan of Kibongo.
