Comment
In 1784, Louis XVI ceded the island to King Gustav III of Sweden in exchange for warehouse rights in Gothenburg. The Swedes made Saint-Barthélemy a free port in 1785. In tribute to the King of Sweden, the island's main town (Le Carénage) was renamed Gustavia around 1787. The island was returned to France in 1878.
