This 50 cent token dates from the early 1900s when Alcatraz Island served as a U.S. military prison, and was used by soldiers and their families for making purchases at the island's Post Exchange (PX).An original Alcatraz PX token was found several years ago in a tidepool at the south end of the island, and is now stored in the museum collection of the Golden Gate National Parks.
