Delano was founded on July 14, 1869 as a railroad town along the Southern Pacific Railroad in honor of the current Secretary of the Interior for the United States at the time, Columbus Delano. The post office was established opened in 1874 and by 1913 Delano had a large enough agricultural community that it incorporated.
