Chinese-American trade tokenBased on the notes in the Token Catalog listing, the "W" is believed to stand for Watsonville. According to the 1913 International Chinese Business Directory, Hop Yick & Co sold general merchandise and their address was P.O. Box 401, Watsonville. In 1888, the Chinese community of Watsonville, Santa Cruz County, was relocated from town and moved across the Pajaro River into the community of Pajaro, Monterey County. However, they often continued to be listed in Watsonville directories.
When researching for additional information on line, the only other reference found was in the Watsonville Pajaronian for January 23, 1890, "The hose cart for the Chinatown Fire Department has been turned over to Chief Engineer Hop Yick"
