Winnemucca, Nevada is named after a 19th century Paiute chief who lived in the area. Peter Ogden established a camp named Mary's River in the area in 1830. When the wagon trains started using the Humboldt Trail, the trading post on the southern bank of the river at Graveley Ford came to be called Frenchman's Ford. In 1863 the town was renamed a third time, taking the current name. The town was a stop for the Central Pacific Railroad, part of the transcontinental line.
