Idaho's only seaport, Lewiston is located at the confluence of the Snake River and Clearwater River. Named after Meriwether Lewis, of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the town was founded in 1861 during the gold rush in what is now Northern Idaho. In 1863 Lewiston became the capital of (the then newly created) Idaho Territory.
