Arlington, Oregon was originally named Alkali and was a station for shipping livestock down the Columbia River. The name was changed to its current name when it was incorporated in 1885. The city was moved to a higher elevation after the John Day Dam was completed in 1963 to avoid the rising waters. The Golden Flood was a bar in Arlington after the city moved. The owners previous bar was located in the area that was flooded when the McNary Dam was completed on the Columbia River in 1945. When the U.S. Government bought out the property, the owner did so well he name the the new business "Golden Flood," after the inundating waters that brought him wealth.
