Dominick DiMatteo founded Dominick's Finer Foods in 1918 in Chicago. In 1968, the chain of 18 stores was sold to Fisher Foods of Cleveland and at that time, company headquarters was located in Oak Brook. In 1981 the family bought back the chain for $100 million. Safeway purchased the chain in 1998. The last stores were closed or sold in January, 2014.
