A total of 37,000 Training Tokens were produced prior to the production of the euros, to be tested by the visually impaired. This was a kind of prototype for training the visually impaired. The training tokens were minted between November 18, 1998 (date of technical modification of the 10 cents and 50 cents) and May 8, 2001 (date of distribution of these coins). These coins were distributed by the state and lent out for a few months, before being recovered and destroyed. The fact that so many coins were recovered by the state is due to the fact that they were supplied with a letter of release to be signed, committing the organizations to return them.

They are very slightly different from today's euros (diameter, weight, etc.) so that these coins are not used as payment coins in vending machines, but the main characteristics are very similar (bimetallic, edge, inscriptions, etc.).

All the Training Tokens distributed in Europe were minted in Pessac, where the different mint marks can be seen on the reverse of each coin.
