A - The Masonic Association "Les Ateliers Réunis" in BrusselsTo stay in Belgium, there is a very commendable example of such a program by Ateliers Réunis. It was in the lodge "The Philanthropic Friends" of Brussels that was born in 1867 the idea of building popular kitchens like what had already been created in France and England. Members of the lodge worked on drawing up the statutes of a cooperative-type establishment, which had to use part of the resources of the Trde la V of their At Actions would begin with the purchase and sale of foodstuffs. Prepared food. The Restos du Coeur of the time (we are in 1867) were born. The Brothers of another Brussels Lodge "The True Friends of the Union and Progress" then wanted to participate in the success of the company.
The association between these two lodges in Brussels then took the name "Les Ateliers Réunis". The first economic restaurant was erected on a piece of land in the city, Place du Jeu de Balles, the current Place du Marché in Brussels. We were able to find a postcard of the time showing the barracks where this soup kitchen was served to the needy.

The first meals were served on March 12, 1868. A dinner said first class cost, discounted 42 cents and was paid using tokens issued by Les Ateliers Réunis and consisted of a half-soup (5ct) , meat (20ct), vegetables (10ct) and obviously a beer (7ct).
Ateliers Réunis emitted some 6,000 of these tokens, which were made at the expense of the two boxes. We found copies of these tokens. On the obverse there is the social name "Les Ateliers Réunis", surrounding the symbolism of a pelican feeding his offspring and on the reverse side the numerical and nominal value of food aid.
