The year was 1864, under the Second Empire. The new fashion for sea bathing gave the visionary Duc de Morny the idea of building a small casino in Deauville to entertain high society. The first Deauville casino was inaugurated in 1864. At the beginning of the 20th century, Deauville lagged behind Trouville-sur-Mer, which was better able to accommodate the capital's wealthy clientele.A new mayor, Désiré Le Hoc, decided to take things in hand. Désiré Le Hoc called on Eugène Cornuché, operator of the Trouville casino, to relaunch operations. In 1910, Cornuché bought the Grand Hôtel du Casino and built a new casino in its place, under the aegis of Georges Wybo in 1912.
It was at this point that the Casino Barrière de Deauville's rich history really began. In 1912 and 1913, architect Théo Petit installed a conglomeration of luxury boutiques behind the casino, including Coco Chanel. Set in a dream setting, the Casino de Deauville was to impose its grand façade on the new beachgoers of the Normandy coast.
After the war, the Casino de Deauville continued to be a popular gambling venue for the world's jet set.
In 1978, the Casino de Deauville was the talk of the town, but not in a good way. Public enemy number 1 Jacques Mesrine held up the Deauville casino. This thunderbolt will give the casino a great deal of free publicity.
The Deauville casino was renovated in 1988. In 1988, it was completely restored by architect Jacques Garcia in a rich Baroque style.
