Center Jardin Hamel was founded in 1969 by Gaëtan Hamel, and sold to the French Poullain group in 2005 (it has since had new owners). There were a few branches, which were closed after financial difficulties. Center Jardin Hamel was destroyed by fire in March 2016. Many animals and butterflies, housed in the garden center for exhibitions, were killed in the fire. The garden center has since been rebuilt and resumed commercial activities.
