Saint Rombaut (or Rumold, Rumoldus) was an 8th-century Anglo-Saxon monk. Consecrated bishop in Rome and sent as a missionary to the northern regions, he evangelized with Saint Willibrord the regions of the southern Netherlands, particularly Brabant. Some say he was of Irish origin. He died in Mechelen around 775, assassinated by two men whom he reproached for their detestable lifestyle. Patron of the archdiocese of Malines-Brussels, he is venerated as a bishop, saint and martyr on June 24. Mechelen Cathedral is dedicated to him. Two high decorations of the Belgian Catholic Church are the gold and silver crosses of Saint-Rombaut.
