Johnson Matthey was founded in London in 1861 and is one of the world’s oldest and most famous precious metals refiners. At one stage, Johnson Matthey operated one of the biggest precious metals refining groups in the world, with operations in the UK, US and Canada. In 2015, Johnson Matthey’s gold and silver refining operations in the US and Canada were acquired by the Japanese group Asahi Holdings. Johnson Matthey silver bars are no longer produced, are considered vintage by many collectors and hold a significant collector premium over more generic bullion bars.This pressed/minted bullion bar feature the classic Johnson Matthey design on the obverse. The JM initials and crossed-hammer logos are repeated diagonally on the reverse. More common among these are bars with 6 full logos which have the highest reported mintage of 725,000.
Less common and highly sought after by collectors are bard with 3 full logos on the reverse. This reverse is typically seen on the Johnson Matthey 10oz platinum bars. Mintage for these bars were reported to be around 25,000 only.
Another rare version of these bars have been reported. While retaining the design on the observe, these bars have a smooth reverse. Mintage for these versions were reported to be around 20,000 only. There are also variations in the serial numbers. Most bars would have a 6-digit serial numbers. Others have a R-letter prefix at the beginning on the serial number or within the serial number. More recent bars have a A-letter prefix at the beginning of the serial number.
