Comment

The Unió Catalanista (in Spanish Catalanist Union), was a Catalanist political group of conservative origin, formed in Barcelona in 1891. In 1892 they promoted an assembly in which the Manresa Bases were approved, which had a certain inspiration in the federal model for Catalan self-government, and were based on the old Catalan constitutions prior to 1714. To commemorate the creation of said political and cultural body and in order to raise funds, in 1900 pieces (medals) with similar characteristics were minted (in modules and metals) to the circulating coins, but without indication of the monetary value, and that by the module, weight and minting metal would correspond to the values of: 5 and 10 peseta cents in copper, to those of 1 and 5 pesetas in silver and those of 20 and 100 pesetas in gold. All of them engraved in a great quality by Vallmitjana. These well-relief medals were put into circulation as if they were coins because they had the same weight, diameter and metal as the coins they partially imitated.
