The area where Bakersfield stands today was first explored by Spanish missionary Father Francisco Garcés in 1776. Gold, oil and agriculture brought settlers into the valley. German born Christian Bohna founded a settlement that was known as Kern Island to the pioneers who build log cabins in the area, (due to the reeded marshland that covered the valley). A flood destroyed the original settlement in 1862. Thomas Baker, a former colonel in the militia of Ohio, settled on the banks of the Kern River in 1863. His settlement, known as Baker's Field, became a stopover for travelers and was later named Bakersfield. The city officially incorporated in 1872 and one year later in 1874 replaced Havilah as the county seat.
