The Wounded Healers silver round series is intended to help create awareness and continued conversation about the challenges that first responders and medical professionals face. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) and mental stress injuries affect many first responders. Many suffer in silence and some unfortunately, turn to suicide.“Paramedics are our own worst critics, when it comes to questioning ourselves about a serious call. Often I’ll find a quiet corner to decompress after a call and go over every detail:
Did I follow my protocols properly?
Were my drug dosages correct?
Did I make a proper diagnosis?
At this time I’m also thinking of the family, knowing that when they’re notified of this death their lives will be altered forever. I don’t know what’s worse, feeling like I may have failed my patient…or failed their family.”
