The Berlin Wall, also known as the "Wall of Shame", was built during the night of August 12-13, 1961, cutting the city of Berlin in two. The German Democratic Republic was trying to stop the massive exodus of East Germans to West Germany. For 28 years, the Berlin Wall will be the symbol of the Cold War, until November 9, 1989 and the beginning of its destruction.
