The first aircraft to take flight in Singapore took place on the 16 March 1911. On this momentous occasion, a Bristol Boxkite biplane piloted by Joseph Christiaens rose into the air from the old Race Course at Farrer Park. It was a flight demonstration at the first aviation meet held in Singapore.
Joseph Christiaens was an engineer, race car driver and aviator born to a well-to-do family near Brussels in Belgium in 1879. His plane the Bristol Boxkite was a modified version of the Henri Farman biplane, a famous and widely used model produced in France and first flown in 1909.
The Singapore Mint issued the first of the Double Dragon series with the release of the Keying in 1985. The silver medallion was struck in 999 silver and finished in proof. The Double Dragon series ran for three years, with the Singapore-Malaysia Railroad silver medallion in 1986 and the final First Flight medallion in 1988. For each design, a one-ounce and a five-ounce medallion were issued. At the time release, the issue price for the former was S$65.00 while the latter was S$230.00
