Image Cir 1908On November 6, 1850, two months after California was admitted to statehood, President Fillmore reserved Mare Island for government use. On September 16, 1854, Mare Island became the first permanent U.S. Naval installation on the west coast. It is located about 23 miles (37 km) northeast of San Francisco. Between the Napa river and San Pablo Bay. Which flows into the San Francisco Bay. The Mare Island ferry transferred personal across the Nape river to the Mare island Navel station from Vallejo between 1879 to 1947. They opened a causeway to travel back and forth to the navel base leading to the end of the ferry service. Several large ships and submarines were built at the facility on Mare Island. In the 1990's when the Government deiced to close many of the the Military facilities. Mare Island became one of the closures. Many building on the island have been protected by making them historic landmarks. The island is in the National Register of Historic Districts with 42 individual city landmarks. The island now has residential and commercial facilities. One thing that many folks don't realize is Mare island was also used in many films. As early as 1917 when Charlie Chaplin, Douglas Fairbanks stared in a film made there. A couple of the latest films films,Netflix teen drama 13 Reasons Why, as well as the 2018 Transformers film Bumblebee. San Francisco Bay Ferry Vallejo Service is still in service (2023). It transports people to and from San Francisco for work and recreation.
