The first and the largest medieval summer festival in Croatia, the Rapska Fjera, is based on a tradition that began on July 21, 1364, when the Island of Rab City Council adopted a decision to honor King Ljudevit the Great, who liberated Island of Rab from the Venetian authorities. This day is also dedicated to St. Christopher, the patron of the city of Rab. Fjera once lasted for 14 days, when the island's inhabitants celebrated the power of a saint who was supposed to save the city from destruction.During the festivities, the whole city returns to the past. Small handicraft workshops and workshops move to the city streets and offer visitors a unique opportunity to take a look at how they traditionally produce a trouser belt or fragrant "pomade", or decorate their hair with tiny flowers the way it was done in the Middle Ages. The wonderful scent of fresh cucumbers spreads through the air, while on the beach a fishing village is constructed and is completely built using traditional tools. Even children's toys can be found there. Streets are full of sounds of songs in music, and visitors are offered tuna, fritule (local pastry), cheese in wine.
