Comment
This commemorative gold medal of the Archbishop and President of the Republic of Cyprus, Makarios III, was struck at the French State Mint in Paris and placed on sale on 6th June, 1966. The obverse shows the effigy of Archbishop Makarios, and the reverse, bicephalous (double-headed) eagle, emblem of the Byzantine Emperors adopted by the Church of Cyprus. Both the obverse and reverse are the work of the Greek Sculptor Basil Philiares. The project, in support of the Archbishop Makarios Fund, was financed by the Cypriot benefactor Mr. A.G. Leventis. The medal was issued in three sizes, corresponding to the half sovereign, the sovereign, and the five-pound gold pieces of Great Britain.Price
