E Shephard Ltd started out as a single Boot and Shoe shop in Gateshead, Tyne & Wear and within 16 years had 10 branches across the region selling a range of household goods. The flagship store was extended to three floors and housed 30 departments in 1934. A huge fire destroyed the building in 1946, and a new store was built, re-opening in 1949. By 1980 however, the business was in decline, the flagship store was sold to Shopping City who eventually closed the site in 1986.
